// About

Hi, I'm Jeffrey.

I'm a Senior AI / Machine Learning Engineer and occasional Data Scientist working inAmsterdam. Whats in a name right? You've reached my personal site.

These days I mostly work on production AI and machine learning: building applications that solve business problems. I've specialized working with text data, from product descriptions, chat messages, log entries, job postings and resumes, to reviews an news articles. The colourful highlights you see on this website are a nod to the style of entity tagging popularized by NLP tools like CoreNLP and displaCy.

Over the years I've had the pleasure of working with a lot of talented people at TNO,Atos,DPG Media, andIndepender. At TNO I worked on ETL processes and some web scraping, mostly in support of research project and open source software. At Atos I was a consultant data scientist and MLE for clients across Europe, mostly on cloud (GCP / Azure) projects. I already mainly worked with text categorization and NER.

At DPG, I was interviewed for our werkenbij website. I wish my office was like this!
With my head in the clouds. I was interviewed for DPG Media's job website ↗

I then spent several years at DPG Media building in a pretty fun near-principal role, building the ML platform behind DPG Media Online Services. I enjoyed building complex ML systems that combined "new" AI with classical machine learning (think LSTMs, xgboost) and was able to pick up AWS cloud engineering too! More recently my career has brought me to Independer in Hilversum, where I'm a senior AI / machine learning engineer on their data science team, again in a mixed platform/model-building role. A team I worked relatively close with during my platform role at DPG! My main objective there: migrate away from a legacy on-prem Windows Server setup toward a cloud-native, modern MLOps stack. What makes it cool is that Independer has a long history (legacy) of data-science driven recommendations to customers, most of the time without the goal of maximizing company profit (= customer does actually go first). If you're keen to read more about my career feel free to check out my CV.

Side projects

I like to work on my own projects from time to time, whether that's scraping some data and using it in a cool way, or building a bird recognition model for my balcony. I also enjoy taking part in hackathons and going to meetups. Sometimes I do event photography for meetups too.

Why I write

I enjoy it as a way of relaxing. I'm active on certain social media where I discuss machine learning and mlops, and I used to blog on Towards Data Science about things in the ML (engineering) space. This site will have most of my material that's not already hosted somewhere else. Things like the odd side project as well as the things putting ML systems into production has taught me.

Away from the keyboard

Outside of data science I enjoy camping, birdwatching, bicycling, and sea kayaking. I'm a certified kayak instructorand I log my trips, being a data person. A few years ago, I received a silver touring award from the Watersportverbond after paddling over 3,500 kilometres. I'm pretty sure my distances are not spectacular at all, but not every one keeps track of them. I do enjoy long distance paddling. One day I'd like to kayak around Iceland; other than that, no big plans.
